Driver in recent accident passes away from injuries

A two vehicle accident near Burlington sends two people to the hospital.

The accident occurred at 9:03 p.m., Monday, March 29, 3 miles east of Burlington at State Highway 8 and County Road 600.

Kathleen Kommer, 28, Coos Bay Oregon, was driving a 2013 Ford Focus eastbound on State Highway 8 when she traveled left of center and struck Kristina Czerniak, 47, Tulsa, who was driving a 2004 Lincoln Navigator going westbound on State Highway 8.

Kommer was transported by Air Evac to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita, Kan. There she was listed in critical condition with massive head and neck injuries.

An update by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported that Kommer passed away.

Czerniak was transported to Kiowa Hospital and then transferred to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kan. There she was listed in stable condition and admitted for observation.

According to the accident report by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, both drivers were listed as apparently normal and seatbelts were in use by both.

Kommer was pinned for approximately five minutes.

The accident was investigated by Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Brock Morgan. He was assisted by Trooper Seth Sturgeon, Alfalfa County EMS, Alva EMS, Alfalfa County Sheriff’s Department, Alva Fire Department, Burlington Fire Department, A&B Fire Department and Air Evac.
