Refuge to host annual fishing derby

Calling all anglers 14-years-old and under.

Bonham Pond will be the site of the annual fishing derby at the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge.

There will be two age divisions. Nine and under will start at 9 a.m. and conclude at 10:30 a.m Saturday, June 5.

Ten through 14 will begin at 10:30 a.m. and continue fishing until noon.

Prizes will be awarded for the top three largest fish in each age division.

Only one prize per person will be awarded.

The event is sponsored by Friends of Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge.

To get to the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge from the four way stop north of Cherokee, travel about 10 miles east on S.H. 11 and then turn right on N2710 Road and go approximately 1 and 1/2 miles until you see the pond on the east side of the road.

The Friends of Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge has other events scheduled for the upcoming months:

• June 26: Introduction to wood carving (using soap)

• August: Youth art contest. Packets will be sent to area schools.

• September 18: Introduction to Falconry (hosted by the Great Salt Plains State Park).
