Tax Commission releases numbers
The May 2021 distribution of sales tax collections by the Oklahoma Tax Commission primarily represents local tax receipts from March business.
Companies that remit more than $2,500 monthly in sales tax receipts are required to file and pay electronically.
The monies they reported this period represent sales from March 16 to 31 and estimated sales from April 1 to the 15.
The May breakdown is as follows:
The disbursement of $189,493,350 in sales tax collections returned to the cities and towns reflected an increase of $43,326,853 from the $146,166,497 distributed to the cities and towns in April last year. The use tax disbursement to cities and towns was $32,497,366.
In county returns, the counties shared in a $31,426,782 sales tax disbursement and a $5,960,081 use tax disbursement.
The following are the sales tax figures for each community, 2021 is listed first and the same time period for 2020, followed by the totals for 2021:
• Aline, $6,749, $980, for an increase of $5,769, for a total of $44,870 in 2021.
• Burlington, $724, $856, for a decrease of $132, for a total of $4.883 in 2021.
• Byron, $710, $110, for an increase of $600, for a total of $2.636 in 2021.
• Carmen, $2,919, $6,690, for a decrease of $3,771, for a total of $17,783 in 2021.
• Cherokee, $56,581, $51,979, for an increase of $4,602, for a total of $249,786 for 2021.
• Goltry, $2,552, $1,116, for an increase of $1,436, for a total of $45,121 in 2021.
• Helena, $15,969, $11,839, for an increase of $4,130, for a total of $61,718 in 2021.
• Jet, $4,118, $3,056, for an increase of $1,062, for a total of $15,002 in 2021.
Alfalfa County collections for 2020 were $84,297 and the figure has increased to $95,107 for an increase of $10,810 from the same time period last year. The county has collected $489,874 for all of 2021.
Use Tax
Use tax collections returned and last year’s figures follow:
• Aline, $9,420, $1,042, for an increase of $8,378.
• Carmen, $2,384, $845, for an increase of $1,539.
• Cherokee, $18,099, $6,794, for an increase of $11,305.
• Goltry, $1,880, $754, for an increase of $1,126.
• Helena, $2,537, $1,261, for an increase of $1,276.
• Jet, $1,051, $494, for an increase of $557.
Alfalfa County as a whole saw an increase of $15,511 from $19,732 in 2020 to $35,243 in 2021.
A use tax is very similar to a sales tax; however, it targets purchases made outside of a given tax jurisdiction. Use taxes are levied on goods or services bought in one state or municipality, then transported into, consumed in, or resold in another municipality or state.
Use taxes aim to preserve sales tax revenues and protect local retailers from competition in jurisdictions with lower sales taxes or no sales taxes.
