Herbert Niles

Herbert Louis Niles was born April 20, 1932 in Cherokee.  He grew up on the family homestead south of Cherokee with his parents, Verg and Ona, and his sister Vergie.

He graduated from Lambert High School, NW Oklahoma State University, and had a Masters Degree in Mathematics from Western Colorado University in Gunnison.  He taught school in Wichita, Kansas for many years before returning to Cherokee to teach and help with the farm.  He was Parthena McCrady’s right hand man for nearly 40 years.

Herb loved all branches of the Masonic Fraternity and was active in all of them all his life.  The Eastern Star and Rainbow had a special place in his heart.  He was Past Master of Corinthian Lodge #307, the Laplanders, and was a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason.  He received his 50 year pin with the Scottish Rite 15 years ago.

In any endeavor, whether with community service, helping a fellow farmer get his wheat cut or fields plowed, or just contributing to others with his time, talent and/or treasure, Herb was there.  His life was never about him.  Few people were as generous, loving, and loyal.  Herb is truly an icon.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Cherokee United Methodist Church Building Fund through the funeral home.
