Wilmina “Nina” Burkes
A Memorial Service for Nina Burkes, will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 12, 2021, at the Carmen Christian Church with Pastor Kirk Board officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Wentworth Mortuary, LLC of Carmen.
Nina Wiggins Burkes was born January 6, 1931, near Cleo Springs to the late Knolt and Belle Wiggins. She passed away April 29, 2020, at her home at the age of 89 years.
Nina grew up in Enid and Cleo Springs, graduating from Cleo Springs High School. On October 16, 1947, she was united in marriage to Charles Burkes. To this union six children were born: Terry, Johnny, Vicki, Kim, Jackie, and Shawn.
Nina worked for many years at the Carmen Nursing Home. After her retirement, she served on the Alfalfa County Election Board, the Carmen After 55 Board, and the Carmen Library Board. She was a published poet, enjoyed traveling, gardening in her flower beds, playing the piano, bowling, fishing and spending time with her grandchildren: Trenton Burke and wife, Sajdah, Ashlee Ryel and husband, Travis, Andrea Burkes McDonald and husband, Josh, Austin Burkes and wife, Tyler, Landon Olson and wife, Ana, Dane Olson and wife, Kristen, Ian Olson, Baye Burkes and wife, Mollie, Gage Burkes, Journee, Bryson, and Jordan Rolfe.
Besides her parents, Knolt and Belle Wiggins, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; her brother, Wayne Wiggins, who recently passed; and two great grandchildren.
Nina is survived by her children, Terry Burkes, Carmen, Johnny Burkes, Carmen, Vicki Burkes, Enid, Kim Olson and husband, Gary, Carmen, Jackie Garcia and husband, Eddie, Enid, and Shawn Burkes and wife, Lisa, Oxford, Kansas; her sister, Elma Riggs, Laverne; grandchildren; great grandchildren; great great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Memorial contributions may be made through the mortuary to the Carmen Christian Church or the Carmen After 55 Club.
