Sherry Ann Canning

Sherry Ann Canning passed away peacefully with her family by her side June 8, 2022 at the age of 78. She was born to Murel and Maycel Bontrager in Cherokee, Oct. 11, 1943. She attended elementary school in Cherokee, Wellington, Kan., Perry and Abell school in Guthrie.

She attended Fogarty Junior High and graduated from Guthrie High School in May 1961. She went on to attend Northwestern Oklahoma State University for a short time before getting a full-time job in Oklahoma City. She stayed in touch with her classmates and met with them regularly for dinners and luncheons.

Sherry married GW Canning Aug. 4, 1963. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary before he passed away in 2013. They raised two children on the Canning homestead east of Guthrie. They were blessed with nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Throughout most of her life she enjoyed coaching little league softball, Round Up Club, line dancing, attending kids and grandkids’ sporting events, cooking, baking, gardening, playing cards, traveling and most importantly,

Sherry spent most of her working career at Guthrie Job Corp as a secretary and computer supervisor. She ended her working career as a secretary at the Trinity Episcopal Church Guthrie and organized their Lunch on Noble program.

She was a devoted church member of the First Christian Church in Guthrie and was baptized in Perry, OK in 1955.

She was preceded in death by her parents Murel and Maycel; husband G.W.; in-laws Oliver and Mary Canning; daughter-in-law Tracie Canning; brother-in-law Billy Canning; sister-in-law Tava Bontrager; great-granddaughter Astrid Pierson; nieces Beverly Armour and Kristina Canning; nephew Roy Barnett and numerous cousins, aunts and uncles.

Sherry is survived by her daughter Shelley Berryman (Robert) of Guthrie; son George “Buddy” Canning of Piedmont, as well as grandchildren: Brittney Jarnagin (Brody), Brayden and Brianna Berryman, Brooklyn Van Groll (Brandon), all of Guthrie, Braxton Canning (Kristie) of Clarksville, TN, Camber Canning of Piedmont, OK, Christa Otterman of Denver, CO, Christan Marchant (Beau) of San Diego, CA, and Brittany Torres (Jerri) of Guthrie.  Great-grandchildren Khloe and Kayden Torres, Rosie and Remi Van Groll, Eloise Pierson, Bryson Jarnagin, Henry Marchant, and Briggs Caughman. Sherry also leaves behind her siblings: Steve and Stan Bontrager.

Sherry was a very selfless, loving and patient person with a heart of pure gold whom her family and church could rely on at any time.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Christian Church, 402 E. Noble Guthrie, OK 73044.

Our family is very thankful for Ronnie Fields and the church family and friends for their kindness and thoughtful prayers.

A celebration of life for Sherry was held Monday, June 13, 2022 at 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Guthrie. Interment followed at Mt. Hope Cemetery Guthrie. Services were under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home in Guthrie.

Visitation was held from 4-6 p.m., Sunday, June 12, 2022
